William Hodges started us off with the Thought of the Day that focused on consistency as a core element to making a sustained and lasting difference. He talked about the compounding effect of showing up every day to serve and how that can lead to overwhelming growth over a period of time.

Meeting Sponsor

William also sponsored this week’s meeting and donated his time to Lyndsay Burch, who is the Executive Artistic Director and CEO of The Sofia: Home of B Street Theatre. She spoke about the history of the theatre, which was founded in 1986 and is now the only remaining professional theatre in the state for young audiences. After 40 years in their original location, the theatre moved to their current location on Capitol Ave. The theatre has produced more than 100 new plays, 60 of which are world, national, West Coast, or regional premiers. It serves over 50,000 students and over 100,000 patrons overall on an annual basis, and was awarded the 2025 Outstanding Theatre of the Year award by the National Theatre Conference. We are fortunate to have such an amazing bastion of the arts here in the heart of Sacramento.

Happy Birthday!

President Kerry Wood then recognized birthdays for the following Rotarians: Liz McClatchy, Jim Henderson, PEN Jamie Furlong, Jim Relles, PP Ken Noack, Nancy Teichert, Brad Towne, and Laura Heintz.

Golf 4 Kids Beneficiaries

Next, Bryan Murray invited teachers and students from Luther Burbank High, the Ralph Richardson Center, and Hiram Johnson/CSUS Transition Program to talk about the programs, trips, and opportunities they are provided as a result of the funds raised through Rotary’s annual Golf 4 Kids event, which is scheduled for May 8, 2026. The students from Luther Burbank High spoke about their senior trip to Pier 39 and field trips to MOSAC. Andrea and Kerri from the Ralph Richardson Center talked about how proceeds from the event help the students, teachers, and parents execute on their “why” – their reason and meaning in their individual lives. Students from Hiram Johnson/CSUS Transition Program spoke about taking a trip to Disneyland and attending prom. These stories served as a reminder about how important it is to support Golf 4 Kids, because of the impact it can have on the lives of others.

Get to Know Your Fellow Rotarian

Next, Elfrena Foord helped the club get to know today’s Pulse reporter, Matt Green. Therefore, you get to read the summary of me in the first person. I am a lawyer at Murphy Austin, and was just invited to become a partner this year. I specialize in advising/defending businesses in employment matters, and I really enjoy giving presentations to different organizations to help them understand the complexities of California employment law and develop strategies to protect themselves. I am married with a 2.5 year old daughter, and recently joined the Fairytale Town board of directors. The quirkiest thing I could come up with about myself is my juggling skills, which are advanced enough to amuse my toddler.

Meeting Speaker: Frank Maranzino, Capital Public Radio

Bob Rosenberg introduced the meeting’s guest speaker – Frank Maranzino – who is the President & General Manager of CapRadio. After an interim term, Frank was promoted to his current position leading CapRadio on April 1, 2026. He began by talking about his son, who is a rescue swimmer in the Coast Guard. When the Coast Guard ships are out in rough seas, the ship’s Bridge (the executive leadership team) have to be working in concert with the engine room (at CapRadio, that’s IT, engineering, technology, on-air talent, marketing, etc.) to power the ship through and keep it safe. Frank could relate to this analogy, as CapRadio has been going through a difficult time recently, and the entire organization had to work together to set it on a new course for success. He spoke about how CapRadio’s turnaround was based on trust, accountability, and honesty from both CapRadio and Sac State staff. In 2023 the organization had over 100 employees. Now they have less than 70. However, in 2023 they had about 160,000 weekly listeners. That number has risen to over 360,000 in 2026 and they have become one of the top 5 radio stations in the Sacramento region. Frank stressed the benefits of servant leadership, and how leadership without service becomes authority; whereas leadership with service becomes stewardship.

Recognition and Announcements

President Kerry recognized the meeting volunteers, including Craig Taylor who filled in for LaToya Wong and greeters Virginia Wade, Dee Johnson, and PP Todd Koolakian. Wine was sponsored by Tom Bacon, while Jim Henderson served as the meeting photographer. Matt Green was the Pulse Reporter.

Sergeant-at-Arms Sarah Hodge encouraged everyone to attend the next meeting on April 28, 2026 at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, where we will hear from guest speaker Mayor Pro Tem and Councilmember Eric Guerra.
