The International Service Committee of the Rotary Club of Sacramento has participated in numerous international service projects and global grants in most of the seven core Rotary areas of focus, including disease prevention and treatment; Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH); Maternal and Child Health; Community Economic Development; and Basic Education and Literacy. See the separate ISC link on this website for our ongoing Safe Water Honduras WASH project to assist multiple communities in rural western Honduras. In addition, here are some of the prior projects we have supported:
2015 Jamaica-
Our ISC contributed $2,000 to The Trees That Feed Foundation (TTFF) planting food-bearing breadfruit trees near elementary schools around Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Tree crops create jobs, feed people, are nutritious, and require less labor, agri-chemicals, fertilizers and space than field crops.
2016 Pakistan and Ongoing-
We granted $2,000 toward suppling reusable therapeutic foods (RUTF) for seriously malnourished children and nursing mothers in Pakistan. We have continued supporting this project almost every year since, including in 2024.
2013, 2016-2017 Ethiopia-
Beginning in 2013, our ISC raised $39,549 towards an $800,000 WASH clean water project in the remote highlands of Ethiopia, over 5 hours from Addis Ababa. Having been asked to return, in 2016 and early 2017, a team of local Rotarians lead by Clayton Lee and PP Peter Dannenfelser, went there to help work on the project. Our contribution was matched through a combination of grants from the Rotary International Foundation and District 5180 Foundation, for a total of $138,422.
2020 and 2021 Uganda-
Our ISC raised 35,000 towards a $4,000,000 WASH clean water project in multiple districts throughout the country of Uganda. This was a combined effort between Rotary and USAID. In 2021, we raised $20,000 in additional funds towards this huge global effort.
2024 Multiple Global Projects
So far this year, 2024, our ISC has elected to recommend contributions to many global grants led by other Rotary Clubs while our Safe Water Honduras global grant, and its subsequent sidecar grant, are being implemented.
They include Peru ($2,000 towards economic development in Peru, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Oklahoma); Ghana ($2,000 towards a WASH project in partnership with the Rotary Club of Salem, VA.); Ethiopia ($2,000 for nutritional programs in Ethiopia, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Binghamton, NY.); Ontario, Canada ($2,000 to help design and build a McDonald Lounge in a hospital for families and children undergoing care in Ontario); and Tanzania ($2,046 towards a rainwater harvesting project in Tanzania).
In addition, our ISC has turned a focus on Finance Accelerating Savings Group Transformation, FAST, by contributing to a global grant for over 11,000 savings group members, primarily women, in Uganda. We have joined RI and VisionFund, a division of World Vision, in a microfinance project to provide loan capital to support local entrepreneurial livelihoods and lift people out of poverty. Stay tuned.
DONATIONS – YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Donations to our RCOS ISC are greatly appreciated and will make a difference to help change the lives for families and children on a global level. Rotary works to improve the basic needs, economy, and welfare of millions of people worldwide.
In 2024, our club renamed the ISC donation fund of our Rotary Foundation as the Phair-Lee donation, in honor of John Phair and Clayton Lee, two longtime members of the ISC who have traveled the world on behalf of Rotary for decades, and have contributed enormously to the success of the ISC. Thank you for your donation.
